Making significant (not extravagant) amounts of ISK hauling is pretty much a no-go early on. The primary reason for this is, you have to lay down a large sum to "secure" the load - contract collateral. If you've only got 50 million, you're not in the ballpark. (These are generally 1 billion ISK.)
Another important consideration, as in all EVE endeavors, is training of course. The likelihood of being trapped in a camp is lower than the EVE buzz's conventional wisdom seems to dictate. However, it happens. Having an established course of action that will succeed which you can suddenly throw into action takes know how, capability and practice. However, other skills simply have to do with maximizing cargo space and speed - if you view this in terms of ISK per hour.
The third significant factor I'll mention here (not pretending to cover the subject by any means) is the ever elusive trust factor. You would be literally entrusted with another player's livelihood, or worldly possessions. This isn't a step wise players take with someone they don't know. Established haulers, such as the most notable Red Frog, find their success through their known reputation. "Trust me..." Any sentence that starts with those words has a high magnitude of fail attached to it. Trust me.
You really have to be sure hauling is "your thing" for what goes into it, which in the end is mainly time and tedium. By the time you're adept enough to haul for the big contracts, the amounts of ISK involved aren't as large as they once might have seemed. (I think Red Frog will tell you their profits are largely in quantity - lots of somewhat profitable hauls, and not in quality - a fortune for occasional hauls.) There are certainly other, better methods to make ISK quickly. And, as I said to begin with, most of the solutions mentioned here involve trade, hauling being merely an appendage to buying and selling goods.
I might add, you'll see a lot of hauling contracts advertised in local, or available in your available contracts index. Bear in mind these are largely scams. They have you put down a "modest" (seeming) contract collateral. The haul is for relatively small amounts over a relatively small distance. Thing is...one of your waypoints will be in low sec - 0.4 will do. At this gate, you'll be ambushed. You'll lose your ship, default on your contract and lose your "modest" contract collateral as well. Should you choose to try one of these, do a "set destination". See if the route runs through a low sec system. Where it does. there's where you'll be hit.
There's a video on YouTube done by a guy who intentionally accepts contracts like these. He arranges a counter ambush with alts and a friend. He takes out the would be attacker, completes the haul. Gets the (usually) exorbitant payment, as well as the kill mail, loot and salvage. Mainly, he does it for fun and to say "In your eye!" to the would-be ganker. (The guy hauls for a prominent hauling corp as his regular job.)
Take it from a mothertrucker!
PS If you want a good list of what to train, look at Red Frog's application requirements.
They lay out the skill set quite well.
